NZDF high capacity mobile communications (demand and economic cost model)

WGS (Wideband Global Satellite communications) is a high capacity communications system owned and controlled by the United States Space Force.

Demand for telecommunication services was determined by examining the NZDF's current practices and assembling bottom-up requirement for information bandwidth. The bottom-up demand was validated by a top down capture of the current and historical demand for information bandwidth.

An economic cost model was then produced that compared the economic cost of using the US Government's Wideband Global Satellite Communications system (more) against the cost and risk for the NZDF of ad-hoc communications capability purchases on the spot market.

Individuals now working for Andcer assembled the various forecasts, provided an economic model, provided business cases to Cabinet for their approval. This project has cost approximately NZD 80 million, and is now in use by each branch of the NZDF.
